The Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery is dedicated to the latest advances of this rapidly evolving surgical field and offering these options to our patients. The Division is committed to resident and fellow education as well as participating actively in quality clinical research projects.
One of our main priorities is to provide a safer and more effective alternative to traditional open surgery by performing the vast majority of our procedures via laparoscopy and/or hysteroscopy. This offers the following benefits to our patients:
- Faster recovery
- Less pain
- Smaller incisions
- Early return to normal activities
- Shorter hospital stay
Certain patients can even be treated in the office without the need for general anesthesia or a hospital admission. Because of minimal discomfort and enhanced convenience, many of our patients decide to go home on the day of surgery, however some choose to stay in the hospital overnight.
We provide comprehensive care for women with: Abnormal uterine bleeding; Pelvic pain; Uterine fibroids; and Endometriosis.
We also collaborate with other BWH gynecology specialists in urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, pediatric and adolescent gynecology and reproductive endocrinology to offer comprehensive care and minimally invasive surgical options for a wide variety of gynecological problems – giving patients multidisciplinary expert care at one location.
We offer a wide variety of surgical options that are tailored to accommodate each patient’s unique clinical situation. Some of the more common procedures are:
- Laparoscopic hysterectomy;
- Laparoscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroids);
- Laparoscopic repair of pelvic organ prolapse;
- Laparoscopic repair of pelvic organ prolapse with uterine preservation;
- Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis;
- Laparoscopic excision of ovarian cysts;
- Hysteroscopic excision of fibroids;
- Hysteroscopic lysis of adhesions;
- Hysteroscopic sterilization (Essure);
- Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation (for heavy periods);
- Office hysteroscopy for evaluation of abnormal bleeding.
It is important to discuss these options with your health care provider. Not all patients are candidates for a minimally invasive surgical procedure, however we are able to offer this option to the vast majority of our patients.
