Diagnosis Information:
Pancreas Overview
Surgical treatment for diseases of the pancreas usually involve treatment of newly diagnosed tumors of the pancreas, or complications of the inflammation of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. The pancreas is a narrow, flat organ that lies behind the stomach and is connected to the intestinal tract by a thin tube known as the pancreatic duct.
The pancreas has two functions: (1) it produces enzymes that are secreted down the duct into the intestines that aid in the digestion of food and (2) it produces insulin into the blood stream to help control diabetes.
The Brigham and Women's Hospital has nearly half a century interest in diseases of the pancreas and pancreatic tumors. We are one of the few national centers that focus clinical work and research in this area.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is an inflammation or swelling of the pancreas that can be caused from several associated problems. These include gallstones, alcohol ingestion, certain medication or drugs, or even trauma.
