Dr. Friedman, who was recruited to the Gastroenterology Division following completion of her GI Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, joined the Division in September 1999. Her clinical and research interests are in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). During her fellowship she designed and initiated two IBD treatment protocols and quantitated the prevalence and incidence of dysplasia and carcinoma in a large population of chronic Crohn’s colitis patients. In addition, she studied the risk of developing dysplasia and cancer in patients with chronic colitis who had had polypectomies rather than colon resections for adenomatous polyps. Currently, she is participating in several IBD treatment protocols, designing an IBD patient database, and continuing to investigate the correct surveillance strategies and the risk for neoplasia in patients with chronic colitis.
