The colon is part of the body's digestive system. The digestive system removes and processes nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water) from food and helps pass waste material out of the body.
The digestive system is made up of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The first 5-6 feet of large intestine are also called the large bowel or colon, and the last 6-8 inches of the large intestine are the rectum and anal canal. The anal canal ends at the anus (the opening of the large intestine to the outside of the body).
