The Department of Dermatology cares for adult patients with diseases of the skin, including skin cancers, immune and allergic processes (e.g., psoriasis, atopic dermatitis), and diseases of other organ systems with skin manifestations. Specialized programs in rheumatologic diseases, infectious diseases and immunology, immunocompromised patients, and wound healing complement a busy and high quality general dermatology practice. While diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases is our central mission, significant energy is also devoted to research. The Dermatology of Dermatology is the site of the National Institutes of Health supported Harvard Skin Disease Research Center, which fosters collaborations and interactions between investigative dermatologists and other biomedical scientists, as well as education, training, and scientific innovation towards the goal of better understanding and treating skin diseases.
Cancers of the skin are the principal focus of the Cutaneous Oncology Disease Program at Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, which is overseen by the BWH Department of Dermatology. Special programs in Melanoma, Cutaneous Lymphoma, and Carcinoma (Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma) have been established. Each involves dermatologic, surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, as well as dermatopathologists, who collaborate to provide the best and most innovative care for skin cancers, regardless of stage. State of the art diagnostic tests and tools are routinely used to establish difficult diagnoses, making the program an international referral center for skin cancers of all types. The Department of Dermatology is also the site of one of only four Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) for Skin Cancer in the nation. These programs, funded by the National Cancer Institute, are focused on translational research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of early and advanced skin cancers.
The Department of Dermatology also includes the Laser and Skin Health Center . Our dermatologists provide expert care for a full range of skin conditions for men and women, including advanced laser and cosmetic treatments to help improve and maintain the appearance of skin. The center is a collaboration between the Department of Dermatology and the Gretchen S. and Edward A. Fish Center for Women’s Health. All state of the art procedures are performed by our own board certified BWH dermatologists.
