The cardiac valve surgery program at BWH is one of the largest in the United States, treating more than 800 patients per year. The Brigham Cardiac Valve Center is a multidisciplinary group of cardiologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons proficient in diagnosing and treating all cardiac valve syndromes and disorders, including mitral valve prolapse and aortic regurgitation. This involves sophisticated cardiac valve symptoms recognition, diagnostic techniques such as three-dimensional echocardiography, MRI and cardiac catheterization.
Cardiac surgeons perform all types of aortic, tricuspid and mitral valve surgery, including the Ross pulmonary autograft switch operation in the young adult, repair of bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valves, homograft valve replacement for endocarditis, and elective aortic valve replacement in all stented and un-stented tissue and mechanical valve prostheses. BWH is a world leader in valve repair for ischemic, rheumatic and myxomatous conditions of the mitral valve. Integrated intraoperative and postoperative echocardiography is used to monitor early and late valve function, and determine the physiology and function of implanted or repaired valves.
Mitral Valve Repair/Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery
Regarding mitral valve surgery, our team has performed approximately 3,000 mitral valve repairs since 1971. In 1996, we launched minimally invasive valve surgery. The week of March 14, 2005 marked our 600th minimally invasive mitral valve operation. Our total series of minimally invasive valve surgeries numbers close to 1,400. (Lawrence H. Cohn, 03/18/05)
