The major goal of the educational program in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine is to train thoughtful, skilled consultants in anesthesia who are excellent pre-, intra-, and post-operative physicians, poised to become clinical and academic leaders in their field.
The department is composed of approximately 90 residents, 20 fellows, and 75 staff physician anesthesiologists. Each staff physician holds a joint appointment to the faculty of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Training is conducted in 40 operating rooms, four obstetric suites, 25 labor and delivery rooms, the Pre-Admitting Test Center, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, the Surgical Intensive Care Units, the Pain Management Center, the Center for Medical Simulation, the Center for Assisted Reproduction, and the world's first Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Service with real-time imaging. Residents also rotate through Boston Children's Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, and other outside facilities.
Teaching is at the bedside during the actual administration of anesthesia or during patient rounds. Topics in physiology, pharmacology, and bioengineering are addressed daily in the operating room, at the bedside, and in departmental laboratories.
A wealth of research opportunities helps make training unique: the department is a prominent national center for both laboratory and clinical research. Senior residents and fellows can become involved in ongoing research in any subspecialty area, or begin original projects with a staff member.
