The BWH Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine consists of 105 staff, 120 fellows & residents, and 10 CRNAs. The Department provides a wide range of clinical anesthesia services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including 44 operating rooms, nine out-of-OR locations, Labor & Delivery, the Weiner Center for Preoperative Evaluation, the Surgical Intensive Care Units (SICU), the cardiac SICU, the Pain Management Center, and Faulkner Hospital. Preoperative medical/surgical evaluations, regional and general anesthetics, labor epidurals, critical care patient management, postoperative pain management, chronic pain management, and emergency services are provided by the Department to over 45,000 BWH patients each year. Over the next few years, the number of BWH anesthetizing locations will increase to approximately 50 ORs and 12 out-of-OR locations, including the Foxboro Ambulatory Surgery Center.
Our clinical research areas include: neural blockade in anesthesia; pain management; anesthetic and analgesic interactions during surgery and in the immediate postoperative period; preemptive analgesia; and studies on ischemia, reperfusion, coagulation and inflammation.
